With two of his Circle collaborators — bassist Dave Holland and drummer Barry Altschul — Chick continues to expand the vocabulary of the piano trio. Holland and Altschul are, like Chick, finely-tuned masters of group improvisation, totally open to all possibilities at any moment. Together, they take on Wayne Shorter’s classic “Nefertiti,” which serves as a launching pad for the rest of the album: deeply felt, expertly performed and ultimately transfixing.
