First Asian Tour in 12 Years by the Classic Elektric Band Lineup
Don’t miss your chance to see this historic E-band tour!
The Elektric Band kicks off this historic tour at Tokyo Blue Note Jazz Club, March 16–20.
While Chick is first among equals in the E-band all the members contribute nightly through their stunning performances and true-group spirit. Each member has cut albums as a leader and led his own acclaimed bands over the years.
Patitucci records prolifically, and notably is part of Wayne Shorter’s long-running landmark quartet, while Weckl’s resume includes Natalie Cole, B.B. King, Mike Stern and hundreds of others. Marienthal has been a huge presence on the R&B and urban jazz scenes since his stint in the Elektric Band, while master guitarist Gambale is the originator of the incredible sweep picking technique used by guitarists the world over and has produced 20 solo albums.
The group sort of reformed itself with everyone’s desire to play together,” says the maestro. “I thought it would be an interesting thing, to take some friends that have experienced the road, through six album projects and tours around the world, and come together again—with everyone healthy and doing well -- to make a new creation. That’s not usually done,” he adds. “You get reunions, and this will be a reunion, but I’m sure it’ll be a new creation. So it snowballed and boom, now we’re booking the band.
Not Your Typical 80’s Hair Band
The Chick Corea Elektric Band followed in the stadium-filling tradition of Corea’s first pioneering electric outfit, Return to Forever.
After 1986’s self-titled debut album with John Patitucci (bass) and Dave Weckl (drums), the classic line-up began in 1987 when Eric Marienthal (saxes) and Frank Gambale (guitar) joined and recorded Light Years.
The Elektric Band quickly became the top electric jazz unit of the era with numerous world tours and eight albums under their collective belts -- through 2004's To the Stars as its most recent effort.
The band’s influence can be heard today in countless jazz bands and beyond.
The fireworks of a live show with Chick and the E-band need to be experienced first hand to be believed.
Buckle your seat belt and get ready for blastoff!
