Chick’s been good friends with the legendary Beatles producer George Martin since 1974, when Martin produced the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s Apocalypse, which featured Gayle Moran Corea on vocals.

But as it turns out, Chick was so absorbed in jazz that he never got around to listening to the Beatles.

“During that time I was so thoroughly immersed in Miles, Coltrane and Bill Evans. “Gary [Burton] was deeply into the Beatles back then. I heard about them and all of the hoopla, but I had zero interest, and I didn’t follow what they were doing, for better or worse.”

Now here’s the twist: despite Chick’s connection with Martin, it wasn’t until 2007, when he was on tour with Bela Fleck, that Chick dug into the Beatles catalog.
